Guide
To Buying A Rocking Horse
Size:, when buying such an expensive item it doesn't make
sense to buy a small one, unless you are limited for space.
A good size for a horse would be one with a saddle height of
at least 30 inches (75cms) this will allow your child to grow
into the horse.
Be careful stands can be
sometimes be oversized to make the overall size of the horse appear
bigger than it is.
If you as the buyer would
like to ride the rocking horse (and a lot of people do) ask the
maker which size is suitable, a well made horse can easily take
the weight of an adult.
Look at the person or company
that you are buying from, how much experience do they have?. Can
they customise the horse to your requirements? or are you fixed
to specific designs or sizes.
Look closely at the carving. A rocking horse is
a beautiful item and at first sight you may be impressed but look
around at all areas and notice the shape, is the underbelly rounded?
does the head have good detail?
Horses should be made of hardwood (although I have
seen some nice laminated ply horses) preferably with hardwood
stands or rockers. Saddles and bridles should be of real leather
and hair should be horsehair.
